Your class schedule has to fit around drop-off, pickup, naps and the days a child wakes up with a fever. This piece walks through building one that holds up, and the campus rules that give a parent room to plan.
Start from the child's day
Write down the fixed points before you open the course list: when care opens and closes, when school lets out, and how long the trip takes each way. Those times set the window you actually have for class. A section that ends ten minutes before pickup on the far side of campus will cause trouble every week.
Grouping classes on two or three days can leave the other days for study and appointments. Some parents prefer short daily blocks that sit inside a school day instead. Either pattern works when it leaves a margin at both ends.
Use registration and section choices
Some colleges, and some states, give student parents early registration so they can claim sections that fit their care hours. Ask the registrar or the student parent office whether your campus does, and what proof it wants. Where there is no such rule, register the minute your window opens and keep a second choice for each course.
Online and hybrid sections can save travel time, but they still carry deadlines and sometimes set meeting times. Read the section notes before choosing one, and check with your advisor that it counts toward your program in the same way.

Plan for the sick day
Attendance and late-work rules are set by each instructor in the syllabus. Read every syllabus in the first week for how absences are handled. Telling instructors early that you are a parent is your choice, and it often makes a later request easier.
Line up backup care before you need it, such as a relative, a neighbor or a campus drop-in program. Keep a short list of classmates who will share notes when you miss a day.
Talk with the aid office before you drop below the credits your aid or a SNAP exemption depends on. Loans need at least half-time enrollment, and Pell is adjusted to the number of credits you carry.
Steps to take

- Ask the registrar about early registration for parents
